PC gaming gives you the best of most worlds. With a decent budget and some gumption, you can build a solid desktop rig -- or you can invest in one of CNET's best gaming PCs and gain access to a wide world of PC exclusives, indie games and even some titles that were previously exclusive to Sony's PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox.

Despite the hopes of many industry analysts, the Steam Machine project, which promised all the benefits of PC gaming with no headaches, led to a paltry set of middling gaming PCs. Valve mothballed the strategy in 2018. Of course, that’s not the end of the story. Far from it.

To say that CES was a PC show this year is an understatement. We spent time with dozens of laptops in Las Vegas, and these are our favorites across nine key categories.

But with the RTX 50-series officially announced, a load of new and updated gaming laptops were announced at CES this year, and having checked them out myself in person, these are the five that really caught my attention.
