There are a number of ways that a plastic laminate job can go wrong. The top substrate panel and its edge banding all have to be smooth and straight. The top and edge surfaces must meet at 90-degrees.

Thin strips of veneer will peel away from both edges. Flip the trimmer over and use the un-shimmed side for a final trimming.
