Technology stocks were rocked to their core Monday after claims made by a Chinese start-up threatened to upend the existing artificial intelligence (AI) paradigm.

DeepSeek stunned the tech world with the release of its R1 "reasoning" model, matching or exceeding OpenAI's reasoning model for a fraction of the cost.

Pat Gelsinger, former CEO at Intel (INTC), is not sweating over new, low-cost artificial intelligence models from Chinese startup DeepSeek. Instead, he believes that DeepSeek’s cost-effective AI model will be a net positive for the industry.

Analysts at BMO said while there are still a lot of questions, the current information available suggests that DeepSeek likely used servers with 50% to 75% less power intensity than servers that use Nvidia's most recent GPUs. No analysts have outright said they were putting a sell rating on Nvidia stock yet, but the backdrop remains uncertain.
