The Deerfield-based pharmacy giant plans to close as many as 1,200 in the coming years, with 5 Chicago stores on the latest list.

Walgreens plans to close five stores in Chicago's South and West sides, part of a wave of closures as the Deerfield-based pharmacy chain tries to cut costs. The company confirmed it will close its locations at 7111 S. Western Ave., 4005 W. 26th St., 9148 S. Commercial Ave., 3405 S. King Drive and 7109 S Jeffery Blvd. beginning Feb. 17.

Walgreens will permanently shut the doors of 12 of its San Francisco locations. The closures are scheduled for late February, according to the company.

Less than a week after Walgreens confirmed the upcoming closure of a large batch of San Francisco locations, KTVU has learned two stores in Oakland have been added to the list.
