Temporal artery thermometers are considered to be very accurate in measuring body temperature. They use infrared technology to measure the temperature of the temporal artery, which is located on the forehead. Temporal thermometers provide quick readings, within several seconds, and can be used on infants, children, and adults. Some research indicates that temporal thermometers may be as accurate as rectal thermometers in children, and provide better readings than ear or armpit thermometers can. However, the TA thermometer has limited sensitivity for detecting cases of rectal fever in infants. In a test done with oral, axillary, tympanic, and forehead thermometers, it was shown that tympanic was the most accurate, while forehead thermometers did the worst.
