If you can bump it up to a gold PSU I’d recommend doing that. The Antec NeoECO is only $64 and the Termaltake Toughpower GX1 is only $57. The gold rating is 5% points better efficiency than bronze across the board which means less heat and thus a lower chance of failure.

My best guess is that you could very well still be fine with a ~900W quality power supply. We used to sell 950W PSU's that powered 24-drive systems which peaked at 6.6A (792W) but that was back in the days of 250GB SATA disks.

What are the considerations I should account for when deciding which PSU should I get? Let's say 12x3.5" HDD for starters. If they all were WD red Plus (8.4W on read/write, let's take 10W to be on the safe side), that means that the PSU should be capable of providing at least 12x10W = 120W just for the drives?

I'm thinking of building a custom home NAS for mass storage, and was looking at power supplies. I've seen results on Google saying that anywhere from 500-750w was plenty, but 750 was more recommended. I've also come to this forum and saw an old topic where high efficiency was more necessary.
