Silicon dioxide nanoparticles, also known as silica nanoparticles or nano-silica, are used in biomedical research due to their stability, low toxicity and ability to be functionalized with a range of molecules and polymers. They are divided into P-type and S-type according to their structure. Silica nanoparticles are natural silicon dioxide particles that have been reduced in size to below 5nm to increase the surface area. The composition of silica nanoparticles can be either 50% or 60% of silicon dioxide, making it a great all-purpose nanoparticle.
